Vision and Learning

Vision is important for development and their learning throughout you or your child’s life. About 80% of learning is through vision. In addition to seeing clearly, there are many visual skills involved. Some examples of visual skills include eye tracking skills, eye-hand coordination, and visual information processing skills. Good visual skills can support reading comprehension, memory, and other cognitive processes, allowing you or your child to reach their full potential and succeed in their academic pursuits. Contact us now and we would be happy to help you book your child for a comprehensive eye examination to set your child up for success!

My child does well in school, do they still need an eye examination?

It is important to note, just because a child is performing well at school, does not mean they are not struggling. There are bright kids who have underdeveloped visual skills, which can slow down their academic performance. For example, if they have difficulties moving their eyes to the correct spots on a page, it may cause them to skip words or phrases and lead them to reread several times to comprehend the material. Although they eventually comprehend the material and do well on their homework or tests, it may take them two or three times longer to study than their peers. Unfortunately, a parent may not know their child is having difficulties with reading if their child is doing well in school.

We would recommend that your child have a comprehensive eye examination and consider a vision therapy examination even if your child is doing well in school. But it is especially important if your child has difficulty with reading or takes a long time to study. Contact us now and we would be happy to help you book your child for a comprehensive eye examination!

What are some visual skills involved with learning?

There are many visual skills involved with learning. They are all interconnected and a deficit in one can affect another. Here are some of the important visual skills you need to optimally learn:

  • Accurate and comfortable eye focusing: The ability to quickly and easily focus on text and shift focus between near and far distances.

  • Eye tracking: The ability to follow lines of text smoothly and accurately, without losing place or skipping words.

  • Eye coordination (binocularity): The ability to use both eyes together effectively and maintain single vision.

  • Peripheral visual awareness: The ability to perceive and attend to objects outside of the direct line of sight.

  • Visual information processing: The ability to accurately interpret and understand the meaning of text.
